Surfer Blood Makes Waves

If you didn’t get a chance to read last month’s post on Surfer Blood, then now is the time to catch a break and hear the band’s full length debut, Astro Coast.

Released on Brooklyn’s budding Kanine Records, Astro Coast is a brilliant array of shiny guitar rock and catchy pop melodies that recalls the sounds of the nineties, when bands like Pavement, Guided by Voices and Weezer ruled the school.  Their breakthrough single, Swim is a prime example of this Indie-Alt nostalgia with its post-punk choruses and fist pumping anthem pop that makes you want to victoriously shout along, “Swim-to-reach-the-end-oh-oh-oh-oh!”

But Surfer Blood successfully blends other styles throughout the album too, notably in Take It Easy, an eclectic pop song filled of crunchy guitar riffs and African inspired rhythms.  There’s also the toe-tapping number, Twin Peaks, which has early British Pop tendencies with its melodic guitars and vocal harmonies.

From start to finish, Astro Coast manages to satisfy our musical taste buds, which is why we think Surfer Blood is easily one of the best new Indie bands of 2010.
